Study-Checklist

  • Topics: Do social processes and dynamics, cultural phenomenons and interactions studied by sociology interest me?
  • Analytical thinking: Do I want to have the possibility to be able to devolop my critical thinking and my analytical skills? Sociology enables you to be able to critically reflect and supports analytical thinking about complex social phenomenons. Through examining different perspectives and theories students develop the skill to look at social problems through a multitude of different lenses. Studying sociology will change and increase your perspectives in the long term.
  • Diverse career possibilities: The knowledge gained through sociology can be applied in many work-spaces. This can include research and science, eduation, public management, management consulting, media and journalism and cultural organisations. Am I open to a wide variety of job possibilites, this includes research, consulting, social work, education and public administration?
  • Interdisciplinary perpectives: Integrating knowledge coming from many different disciplines like anthropology, psychology and political sciences to understand social phenomenons is part of studying sociology. Through discussing different cultures, value systems and ways of life, sociology takes part in developing a better and deeper understanding for the diversity and complexity of societies.
  • Abstract concepts: Sociological topics are of analytical/theoretical nature. They are not oriented on application or praticability, but they are designed to convey scientific knowledge and the corresponding skills. Am I interested in discussing abstract concepts and theories present in sociology?
  • Statistical Methods: The methods of empirical social analysis result in having to deal with calculations based on statistics. Am I open to work with statistical methods and work on the analysis of data, often used in research?
  • Subjective perspectives: Am I prepared to work with sociological perpectives that are outside of my own convictions and could lead me to questioning these?
  • Reading: Do I like to read scientific essays and am I prepared to read a lot? Am I open to work on literature that could lead to a higher effort in reading and discussion?
  • Research: Am I open to be a part of extensive research projects, requiering time and personal engagement, to be able to investigate complex social phenomenons?
