Structure of the degree

The one major bachelors degree consists of 140 ECTS (15 Module and the bachelors thesis). Key qualifications (30 ECTS) have to be additionally acquired, this has to include a two-month internship in a fitting occupation. It is being adivsed to take other courses that are designed to built qualifications fitting job descriptions for sociology.

The degree itself is structured into three phases:

  • Phase 1 (Semester 1-2): Introduction into the basis of sociology with a focus on social structural analysis, sociological theory and empiricial methods as well as a module in one area of interest being taught at the institute
  • Phase 2 (Semester 3-4): Deepening of the knowledge concerning sociological theory, statistical analysis and another module in one area of interest being taught at the institute
  • Phase 3 (Semester 5-6): Deepening of the knowledge concerning sociological theory and one area of interest being taught at the institute. There will be a strong fokus on independent scietific work.

The first year of study is concluded by a preliminary examination (called ‘Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung’ for short GOP). This examination is passed when the student has completed 40 ECTS-points. If the exam is not being passed at the first try, there is the possibility for one re-examination, this stands in contrast to the typical three tries that are being offered. It is advised to finish your GOP by your second semester but it has to be passed by the end of your third.

We recommend to take a look at the general study regulations concerning the one-major bachelors of sociology. You can find the versions as appendix to this page as well as the study regulations concerning sociology in german.
