Structure of the Degree

If you study sociology as part of the two-subject degree you can choose between sociology as your first subject (80 ECTS, 32 SWS, 9 Module as well as your bachelors thesis) or as your second (70 ECTS, 28 SWS, 8 Modules) in combination with a multitude of other subjcts (take a look at possible combinations). We recommend combining sociology with philosophy, political sciences, education, theatre and media sciences or economics.

Key qualifications (20ECTS) have to be additionally acquired, this has to include a two-month internship (10 ECTS) in a fitting occupation. It is being adivsed to take other courses that are designed to built qualifications fitting job descriptions for sociology.

The Programm is structured into three phases:

  • Phase 1 (Semester 1-2):  Introduction into sociology concerning social structural analysis, sociological theory, empirical methods and your first module in one of the areas of interest being taught at the institute
  • Phase 2 (Semester 3-4): Deepening of your theoretical knowledge, statistical analysis as well as your second module in another area of interest being taught at the institute
  • Phase 3 (Semester 5-6): Deeping of the subject-related areas of application and sociological theory. Students are being encouraged to work independently in scientific research

The first year of study is concluded by a preliminary examination (called ‘Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung’ for short GOP). This examination is passed when the student has completed 40 ECTS-points. If the exam is not being passed at the first try, there is the possibility for one re-examination, this stands in contrast to the typical three tries that are being offered. It is advised to finish your GOP by your second semester but it has to be passed by the end of your third

We recommend to take a look at the general study regulations concerning the one-major bachelors of sociology. You can find the versions as appendix to this page as well as the study regulations concerning sociology in german.
